Hasn't Livejournal survived at least a couple of those, though? Myspace and Facebook, and probably another fad or two that I missed completely. There was a discussion about this on a blog I read sometimes a few weeks ago, and someone there put it rather well, I thought - the people who stayed on LJ were the ones who actually have something to write about. I think LJ will survive, unlike many other networking sites.
The communities are what makes LJ stand out the most for me, that's what made me get a new account, but the friends page is a great thing, too.

I hate Facebook, but I capitulated and got an account because I have friends who post photos and the like there and nowhere else. The intention was to fly under the radar and only use it to keep track of them, but I have to admit (grudgingly) that it's actually very useful for getting club and scene information too, as dreadful as it is.
