"Dance of the Dessert Dames"

Great series of photographs from New Year's Eve:

V and I preparing the dessert after dinner, both of us gloriously tipsy. Love how these came out!

I like the wall paper.

So do I, it's gorgeous up close too, William Morris' honeysuckle pattern. The whole house is gorgeous - M and S live way out of Stockholm, at the extreme end of the public transport system, but I'm still envious of that fabulous house sometimes. They're doing a brilliant job with it.

Oh question, whats the tax on Booze in sweden ?

[identity profile] pimpinett.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Apparently that's a very complicated question - I had no idea, so I looked it up. Seems that it's 1.66 SEK/liter for beer, varying from 7.58 SEK/l to 45.17 SEK/l for wines and spirits, depending on the alcohol content, and a whopping 501.41 SEK/l of pure alcohol - not that that's available at the liqour store.

Swedes are cheap dates...

hmmm I had always found it expensive when traveling in scandinavia, or outright prohibition. I have been told this was because of the long darkness there was a problem with drinking. Is this true or just an old wives tale ????

No, that's true - alcohol, as in vodka and other strong spirits, was a huge part of the economy and everyday life in the 19th century, the consumption is supposed to have reached 45 liters per year and person in the early 19th century. In the rural economy people were paid in part in spirits, there was schnappsing for breakfast, lunch and dinner, more or less, they gave screaming babies a bit of cloth dipped in vodka to keep them quiet, and so on. Huge problems followed, of course, which led to various restrictions and a sort of ration system for alcohol in the early 20th century. The remnants today are the alcohol taxes, and the fact that there is a state-owned monopoly on selling alcohol.

Yup. Similar systems and situations in at least Norway and Finland, I think. Denmark has always been a little more continental, although their alcohol taxes are still higher than Germany's, IIRC, so the Norwegians cross the border to Sweden to buy alcohol because their currency is so much stronger than ours; Swedes living in the south go to Denmark, because their alcohol taxes are much lower (if they live in Malmö they apparently just call one of the many people who smuggle, place an order and get it delivered), in Stockholm we're more likely to buy tax free booze on the ferries to Helsinki, Tallinn and Åland, and the Danes travel to Germany for even lower prices. The Finns probably turn to the ferries like we do, the Baltic countries and/or Russia, or they do like we do in northern Sweden and distill their own illegal booze. There you have it, a pretty merry-go-round of alcohol tax evasion around the Baltic Sea... :)

Ahhh..these are such great photos! I love these type of unposed pix with some action etc :) And your dress looks great. I'd love to be able to see the sleeve details more. Is it a military aplication?

[identity profile] pimpinett.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, those are always fun. Thanks, I'm not entirely pleased with the dress, but it's allright - will try to have photos taken. The appliqué is military inspired, yes, I looked at armbands like this (http://www.surplusandoutdoors.com/ishop/877/shopscr3035.html) and just did the basic shape on the sleeve, in contrasting fabric.
